Particularly critical is task *sharing* - three projects all share TASK X - and folks from any one of those projects - or from the volunteer stream - could do X and then all those projects would be notified of progress.
Helps squeeze the replication out of the effort without requiring everybody to be on the same task management software.
Ideally, of course, this generalizes to a standard, like an API or some such thing - distributed task mangling interface - dtmi - like SMTP or NNTP but for tasks.
